BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It cannot tell muscle from fat.
How it's calculated
BMI (body mass index) compares your weight with your height. Formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Example: a person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in) tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2. BMI chart for adults, WHO scale: underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5 to 24.9, overweight 25 to 29.9, obese 30 and above. Asian scale (better for people from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh): underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5 to 22.9, overweight 23 to 24.9, obese 25 and above. South Asians face a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease at a lower BMI, which is why the Asian cut-offs are lower. The formula and chart are the same for adult men and women. BMI is for adults aged 18 and over. It cannot tell muscle from fat, and it is not reliable during pregnancy.
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, 70 kg and 1.70 m gives a BMI of 24.2.
What is a normal BMI?
On the WHO scale, a normal BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. On the Asian scale, used for South Asians, it is 18.5 to 22.9.
Is this calculator free and private?
Yes. It is free to use and needs no sign-up. All calculations run in your browser, so the numbers you enter are not sent to our server.
How do I calculate BMI in kg and feet?
Convert your height to centimetres first: 1 foot = 30.48 cm and 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so 5 ft 7 in = 170 cm. Then enter that height and your weight in kg above.
Is BMI different for women and men?
No. Adult women and men use the same formula and the same chart. Women usually carry more body fat at the same BMI.
Does age change BMI?
For adults, the BMI categories do not change with age. Children and teenagers are checked against age-and-sex charts instead.
How accurate is BMI?
BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It can overestimate fat in athletes and underestimate it in older people who have lost muscle. Results are estimates for information only, not professional advice.
